About our Garden Center Nursery

GROWING IS A FAMILY TRADITION…

Plant Masters has been in bloom since the 1940’s when Grandpa started the business in the Mount Clemens area . At that time, everything was grown outside and sold “off the farm” to neighbors, business and at the Eastern Market.

As the business bloomed, so did the customers, we became the supplier to Franks Nurseries, 50+ stores as well as other greenhouses and garden centers. In the 80’s Grandpa “retired” and his son and daughter-in-law, Don and Tina VanThomme took over the business.

Growing Vegetables and Flowers

Mulch for healthy plants

In 1990 Plant Masters was moved “up North”, greenhouse by greenhouse, and opened in Suttons Bay as a retail Garden Center.

Although, the world and the greenhouse business has changed since the 1940’s, we still grow our own plants the “old fashioned way”, which shows through in our quality and selection.

PRESS RELEASE-

PLANTMASTERS OF BELLAIRE CLOSES ITS DOORS

After eight wonderful seasons, PlantMasters of Suttons Bay has decided to close its satellite location in Bellaire. Many factors lead to the difficult decision. “We worked in Suttons Bay all winter and then in the Spring, when my parents (the owners in Suttons Bay) needed us most we left for Bellaire.” says Eric VanThomme, Owner of the Bellaire store. The Suttons Bay location is getting so big, the whole family is needed there in the Spring. He went on to say, “We will miss Bellaire and leave with nothing but fond memories and life long friendships.” The another factor was that the VanThomme family were seasonal Bellaire residents and moving every year for four months was difficult on the family. “We didn’t have children when we opened in Bellaire, it (moving) was starting to get harder and harder every year. There comes a time, you gotta do what’s in the best interest of the kids.” Unfortunately, being open year round in Bellaire wasn’t a feasible option. “The Greenhouse business just isn’t a year round endeavor. We know it is a big loss for the community. We hope our customers will come visit us in Suttons Bay.”
